UN Population Trends--Current projections--The suspected trend is going to go as a Medium rate.
Remember, billion and trillion is different in different country.
One in five people worldwide lives in a city with more than 1 million inhabitants--
Delhi will overtake Tokyo as the world's largest cit by 2030.
Most of the world's fastest growing cities are in Asia and Africa.-- Most cities are vulnerable to at least one tyep of natural disaster.
More educated a woman, the longer they wait to have children. Thus, they have fewer children. The role of women in society has major impacts on demography.
Children use to be insurance for them in old age.
You need 2.1 to keep the population to remain the same.
The least developed contries are catching up to longevity.
So, what do you do with those that helped with the millennial population demographic? The buildings (China, not India) jobs, etc. --
Fastest growing market in the world. 13% to 28%--wow.
This is because life expectancy.
As the population gets older, then price earning ratios go down. As people age, you tend not to save and invest in more conservative investments. They also change what they buy.
23% of migrants initiated start ups.
Hong Kong--global cities and global cities are where globalization happens.
Rapid growing urban cities have issues.
Agglomeration economies.
Truly global hubs: London and NYC Regional hubs: Panama, Signapore Gateways: Hong kong, Sydney
The Olympics--what is gained by hosting the games. The only city where there was a benefit--1992 Barcelona. Tourism.

Week 2: Money Around the World
Gini coefficient: A 0 everyone has the same.While 100, only one enjoys the wealth.
Signapore-- A first world country.
Technology is NOT the great equalizer
The 2008 Liechtenstein tax affair is a series of tax investigations in numerous countries whose governments suspect that some of their citizens may have evaded tax obligations by using banks and trusts in Liechtenstein; the affair broke open with the biggest complex of investigations ever initiated for tax evasion in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Tax haven Bermuda--insurance companies. 15,000 insurance companies--Global business is done there.
Market of consumption is the middle house. "Global middle class" --
There is a shift from the EU and US as leaders in the middle class and China and India's middle class will grow. This is going to bring big changes.
This is the middle class--look at India
The large increase of the middle class will be the Asia Pacific region. India and China.
India is slated to grow to be the largest population in the world, exceeding China. In the future.
Tata nano car. It was launched in 2009, it is used in a small areas. Yet, it ended up being a failure. Touted as the most inexpensive car in the world. Cars are a reflection/projection of a persons' self image, aspirational.
Gender inequality.
Most wealth is held by 50 years and older.
Women live longer than men. Some say that stress impact longeivity.
There is a projection that more women will be millionaires then men. |

Week 3: Global Economic and Financial Imbalances
People like certain currency. Trust is the Key to usage.
Chinese have a currency, but it can only be used in China.
The Swiss have a very safe currency.
What is the dominant currency for the world?
There is a lot going on with money--there are many requirements needed to be stable.
Trade Bloc:
GATT (1947) Gerneral Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. It is now called the World Trade Organization (WTO)
Free trade, goods can pass freely between companies.
NAFTA--Movement of goods but not labor.
First Trade Blocs was from Germany. 1934.
NAFTA--Rich and developing countries that work together. "Social Dumping" In Oct. 2011, Mexican trucks were able to enter the US. It is protectionist--Insider rather than outsiders.
WTO:
Trade Blocs are controversial--political.
The EU has grown after WW2. 28 member countries (Jan. 2019)
Euro became in 1999--
People move in the United States--2.3% Part of this is because there is a language barrier
The EU is integrated.

2001 was a pivotal year. When did the 21st begin? Because 9/11, Sept.17, 2001 China entered the WTO.
Political Regimes-- Totalitarian (Cuba), Authoritarian, Sultanistic (family, klan)
Anocracy--In practice they manipulate power--Wierd combinations--There has been a rise in these. (mostly unstable)
Democracies have risen too.
The world has become more unstable geopolitically.
Failed state--loss of law and order. Public services are limited.
We still have a lot of failed states
Long arc of geopolitical instablity.
Charateristic of these countries--Very young population, ethnic/religious conflict, unstalbe systems, corruption, High reserve and minerals.
Increase in terrorism. Concentration of certain countries
Refugees and displaced populations have impacted the world. It has grown quickly. It is expensive to the hosting country.
What is the poper role of the state? What is good goverance?
Use to compete on investments, worldwide. Want to get a higher score.
The Rise and Fall of Global Powers?

Global Power: ablility to influence globally.
There are patterns in History.
The US and China are close in size yet there is some unrest in parts of their country. Access to seas.
Who has soft power in the world? Knowledge, Hollywood,
The US has the top patents in the world.
Who has a chance to be a global power indicators in the world--US, China, India, Germany (EU), and Russia.
China's Economic Muscle:

The G-7 and G-20 were created a long time ago.
Russia has an ageing population.
